Most of the time a slider that will not lock has nothing wrong with its lock: the door has dropped on worn rollers and the hook no longer meets its keeper. Rollers, keepers and handles are replaced and the door re-hung so it locks again.

A coast of terraces, and twenty years of sand in the tracks
Santa Pola grew fastest in the 1990s and 2000s: those two decades account for more than half of its properties today. That is the era of the aluminium slider onto the terrace, the solarium door and the balcony, in the bungalows of Gran Alacant, the terraced houses of Santa Pola del Este and the apartment blocks along the beaches.
Sliders suffer more from this climate than front doors do. Sand blows into the bottom track, salt attacks the small steel parts of the hook and the keeper, and three months of summer use wear the rollers. With so little rain, the grit stays put. The parts
What gets repaired on a sliding door
- Hook locks, the mechanism in the frame that catches when you turn the handle. Replaced when the hook is worn or broken.
- Keepers, the plate the hook catches on. Realigned or renewed, often the whole fix.
- Rollers, under the door. Worn rollers let the door drop, so nothing lines up.
- Handles, with or without a key cylinder, including adding a key lock to a handle-only door.
- Tilt-and-turn and casement doors in PVC, whose multipoint mechanism works on the same principle.

Simple care
Keeping a slider running between visits
Vacuum the bottom track rather than washing sand along it. A silicone or PTFE spray on the rollers and the hook, never oil, which picks up more sand. Lock the slider when you leave for the winter, so it sits closed and aligned. For flats left empty, these checks belong on the list with everything else; owners of lets and second homes can have it done with the rest of the locks. The handle turns but the slider does not stay locked. What has gone?
Usually the hook inside the frame no longer reaches its keeper, because the door has dropped on worn rollers or the keeper has worked loose. Both are adjustable or replaceable without changing the door.
Can a key lock be added to a terrace slider that only has a handle?
On most aluminium and PVC sliders, yes: either a handle with a built-in cylinder or a separate lock fitted to the frame. Which one depends on the profile, so a photo helps.
Is it worth repairing an old aluminium slider, or should the whole door be replaced?
If the frame is straight and the glass is sound, the lock, rollers and keepers can almost always be renewed for much less than a new door. Replacing the whole unit is a job for a carpenter or glazier, not a locksmith.
Can you get into the flat through a locked slider if I am stuck on the terrace?
Yes, that happens on ground floors and solariums. Ring as you would for any lockout; whether it is opened from outside or through the front door depends on where you are.
