Who is responsible, who to ring first, and what a locksmith may open. 5 October 2026 · 4 min read In Gran Alacant and Santa Pola del Este, many homes sit inside a private urbanisation: a wall or a fence, a car gate, a pedestrian gate, a pool and gardens shared by everyone. It is a pleasant way to live until the evening the pedestrian gate refuses your fob, and your perfectly good front door key is on the wrong side of it. ## The gate is not yours That is the first thing to understand. The gate, its lock, its code pad and its fob reader belong to the community of owners. A locksmith should not open, force or alter a community gate on the word of one resident, any more than you would want a stranger let into your garden by someone who said they lived there. So the first call is not to a locksmith. ## Who to ring first 1. **A neighbour.** Someone inside can open the pedestrian gate in seconds. In a big urbanisation, a WhatsApp group of residents is the quickest route. 2. **The community administrator or the president.** Look for their number on the noticeboard by the gate; some administrators keep an out-of-hours line. 3. **The maintenance company or the gatekeeper**, if the urbanisation has one. ## Why the gate stopped working - **A dead fob battery**, or a fob deactivated after a change in the community’s list. - **A changed code** that nobody passed on to tenants or holiday guests. - **A seized lock** on a pedestrian gate that has stood in salt air: a mechanical fault, and the one a locksmith fixes, with the community’s go-ahead. - **A power cut** that leaves an electric lock shut. ## When a locksmith does come in With the administrator, the president or the maintenance company on the phone, a seized gate lock can be opened and repaired or replaced, and the invoice made out to the community.
